Atmospheres are not the only issue, either. Water from these respective environments are different--the tryonn, being a largely water-based species, also will have similar issues with breathing the water of other atmospheres. For the most part, water from non-compatible atmospheres is poisoned, either minorly or majorly, and would need to be "purified" to be drinkable for species from other atmospheres.

There are many sentient races in the Hayven Celestia universe. With only a few exceptions, most planets that support intelligent life only bring about one form of it, and so unless noted each race has exactly one native homeworld. While intelligent life is relatively rare, the galaxy is a very big place and has been explored for a very long time and so possesses an abundance of examples.

Canon Species

Species which have appeared in published works

Anup

  • Tall (~3m) canid race with long ears and uniformly short, dark fur.
  • Bromine atmosphere
  • Find it very impolite (overly intimate) to use hands in direct reference to others, including touching, pointing, or making gestures. Instead, they use rods for such actions.
  • Anup rods are plated with a highly conductive gold alloy and are heavily personalized; since the computer age they encode their rods with a digital signature in lieu of using a pawprint or other method of identification.

Arrunian

  • Avian race capable of flight. ~4m long, two legs, two wings, walks on talons and "hands" of wings
  • Chlorine atmosphere

Coosa

  • Tanuki-like species, short, ~1.1m tall. Have very round and bouncy bodies.
  • Ammonia atmosphere
  • Very arboreal

Geordian

  • Medium-sized (~1.7m) felid race, typically have stripes.
  • Ammonia atmosphere
  • Geordians were the first species to discover how to harness wormhole gates and built a great civilization, but they have since collapsed and are now vassals of the krakun.

Geroo

  • Medium-sized (~1.8m) kangaroo-like species, but with canine traits.
  • Oxygen atmosphere
  • Typically wear beaded necklaces and tail rings. Often wear strands on their armbands.
  • Geroo Religion and Lore

Hekiru

  • Small-sized (~1.2m - 1.5m) vulpine race.
  • Sulfur atmosphere
  • Largely non-verbal. Native Hekirunese is solely sign language with occasional chirps and chitters. Nevertheless, they can be taught to speak other languages.

Krakun

  • Absolutely enormous (~12m to shoulder, ~36m to tail) draconic race that walks on all fours known for being resilient, intelligent, and very very long-lived.
  • Sulfur atmosphere

Kyacaotl

  • Canine race standing around 1.8 meters in height.
  • Chlorine atmopshere
  • Wear masks to conceal faces as a cultural religious tradition, those without masks are seen as outcasts or slaves.
  • Worship a goddess named Alamanotl, there are smaller children gods of hers which are also revered such as Shino (Wisdom) and Shaolyotl.

Lio

  • Tall (~2.2m) leonine race that grows famously long manes.
  • Oxygen Atmosphere

Meeri

Mysa

  • Very small (~0.4m) mouse-like race, usually living within the slums of Liotec.
  • Oxygen atmosphere

Ringel

  • Short (~1.4m) lemurian race with long ringed tails.
  • Oxygen atmosphere
  • Known galaxy-wide for being extremely open in regards to sex

Ssarith

  • Very tall (~4.5m at rest, ~13.5m head to tailtip) naga-like species.
  • Carbon atmosphere
  • The "ss" is sharp, and their species name is properly written as ßarith.

Sourang

  • Long-bodied species (~3.7m tall) largely considered vermin by the krakun, but in actuality fully intelligent and civilized.
  • Native atmosphere irrelevant--sourang can adapt their bodies to live in any atmosphere.
  • Able to modify their own DNA.

Turek

  • Mysterious saurian race (~3.6m tall) known largely by reputation, enemy of the krakun
  • Fluorine atmosphere

Ulayavi

Umbran

  • Ursine species (~3.4m but with great variation in height)
  • Oxygen atmosphere

Established Species

Species which have appeared in unpublished works

Ittriani

Katakori

  • "Tree squirrel" sapient species.

Montrose

  • Moongose-like species. Males are ~1.5m tall, females are ~2.1m tall.
  • Carbon atmosphere
  • Female-dominated species, though males outnumber females 2-to-1

Polatosha

  • "Flying squirrel" sapient species.

Tryonn

  • Fuzzy shark species. No set size; size is instead based on their diet, but military service usually pegs adults around ~2m in height
  • Chlorine atmosphere
  • Tryonn spend the majority of their time in the water and can breathe water while swimming; they prefer this to living on land.

Proposed Species

Fisi

Haske

  • sabertooth tiger race.
  • medium-sized, long furred, and adapted to live in frigid environments

Ursar

  • bear race
  • large bodies
  • specialize in weapon creation and physical combat

Ystryx

  • Porcupine race
  • 1-2.5 meters in height.
  • Quills can grow up to a meter long and are seen as a status symbol in the community

Native/Compatible – Does not necessarily mean NO issues, but issues tend to be minor (low/excessive saturation, atmospheric pressure differences, etc)
Temporarily Survivable – Cannot breathe fully, but will not choke instantly; can survive anywhere between minutes and hours. Eye and open wound contact with atmosphere is a non-issue.
Non-Breathable, Full Contact Okay – Rebreather only is fine, contact with the atmosphere is not (too) dangerous for long periods of time. Eye contact and open wounds won’t cause too much issue
Non-Breathable, Skin Contact Okay – Full face mask required at minimum, can cause serious issues on contact with eyes, open wounds
Contact Dangerous – Must wear full environment suit, skin contact will immediately or very quickly become an issue

Notes on atmospheric compatibility

For purposes of simplicity, atmospheres settle into a number of "types". While these types are not precisely exact, they are close enough to allow some species to share atmospheres. Most atmospheres have a mixture of oxygen and inert gas (usually nitrogen) in their chemistry. The listed chemical or element is not the raw elemental chemical--it is just the basis by which the rest of the atmosphere is built. For instance, while elemental chlorine is very dangerous for all sorts of reasons, atmospheric chlorine is more-or-less like an overzealous pool cleaner.

Also note these divisions are not the full story. For instance, while sulfuric atmosphere contact is bad for most species, geroo experience it worse than others--while other species will experience burns and hair loss after prolonged contact, geroo will experience this almost immediately. Similarly, while most species can "breathe" oxygen atmospheres for a few minutes, krakun can survive in these atmospheres for multiple hours.

Surgery is utilised to overcome limited atmospheric issues. While there is no specified limit, canon surgery workarounds exist up to the 'Non-Breathable, Full Contact Okay' category for logical reasons of contact issues. Genetic modification technology is not enough to make another species compatible, except explicitly for the sourang, which is intended to be the exception and not the norm. Read the species to learn more. Surgery has so far included preventative to mitigate exposure for 'Non-Breathable, Full Contact Okay', and supplementing for 'Temporarily Survivable' atmosphere, where the atmosphere lacks the required compounds for survival.

Food is another matter entirely. Some amino acids are universal. Some foods, like javea, can be shared across multiple species, but a good bulk of foods are specific for individual species. It is possible to find krakun food that is edible for geroo, but the more incompatible the atmospheres, the rarer the potential food sources get.

  • Some atmosphere types proposed but not used yet: Methane, Phosphorous
