The Calendar
The calendar used for general reference is the local calendar of Krakuntec Prime. Ignoring variations in relativistic effects, the imperial calendar can be thought of as within 5% of an Earth year (actual amount not yet set). Standard date format is DD-MM-YYYYY KEF (Krakun Empire Foundation). Krakuntec years are forced to be exactly 360 days long, which means that calendar drift, even for Krakuntec Prime, is not uncommon when going by this standard. Most planets will operate by a local calendar, but for translation purposes most species ages are given in KY.
The Present
"The present" is somewhat nebulous in a series that takes place over several decades, but for reference, the year in which The Final Days of the White Flower II occurs is 21568 KEF. Most stories are plus or minus a hundred years around this point. Most points of reference are relative to this but are usually only roughly approximated.
The current era is considered an era of discovery. Only a few thousand years ago, few species were in contact with one another in general. Even though the krakun had spaceflight for well over 100,000 years, they had not encountered any (or at least many) other intelligent species in their exploration, until they discovered signals from and encountered a geordian outpost. The geordians had invented a marvelous technology called the wormhole gate, which allowed instantaneous travel between any two locations, provided the slow travel had been performed at least once and a gate constructed at the other end. This caused an explosion in galactic exploration, as the krakun had long desired territorial expansion. While slow at first, the sheer amount of resources that the krakun (and subsequently the lio and other major powers) poured into this project ensured that many, many concurrent missions could happen simultaneously. Aside from pre-krakun geordian exploration missions, The vast majority of species have only known about the existence of others for a few thousand years by this point.
