Representation of HC in Audio
As of this writing, there are ten HC audiobooks. They've all been recorded by Rafe Beckley (a.k.a. Piers Ryman), but the future is always uncertain, so Rafe has asked that we capture some details of how he performs the various races so that any future voice actors can strive for consistency with the books that are already out. This page is mostly rough notes and can always be refined as we go.
- Geroo have all had UK accents so far (I think?)
- Ringel have had UK working class accents - apart from one stand out Russian (Sinon from Rick's TFotWF2 trilogy).
- If I recall, Umbrans have had South West UK accents?
Many character appropriate accents in the anthology - but they don't necessarily conform to lore, if that's even a thing yet.
We recognize that given the way that the universe is expanding, perhaps we may need to think about the lore as regards to accents and vocal choices.
I'm conditioned to do the acting stuff and pop accents when they accentuate character. Sinon is a great example of this - you said you'd heard him as Russian-ish, so that's what we did. I love it.
What does that mean for the universe?
A Russian accent (ish) carries a connotation. So does a Modern London English accent, so does a Southern US accent, so does a Spanish accent etc.
What are the accent rules of the universe?
The vocal qualities are, for me, pretty much given. I mean this in as much as -unless other qualities are canon, like the Sourang - the vocal intonations and qualities are the same as human language.
Is accent important?
Is use of breath important?
What vocal commonalities does each race have?
Should a Geroo always sound like a Geroo?
Should an Umbran always sound like an Umbran?
If so, how? Is it an accent? Is it a vocal quality? Is it pacing? Is it staccato / legato / other?
