The umbrans were first introduced by Frances Pauli for the short story Under the Umbran Sun in Tales of Hayven Celestia. Bear-like species have been proposed before this, namely the ursar by Fenrir Black, but for purposes of consolidation, the concepts for the ursar are assumed to be merged into the umbran design.
